Day three : Early start, as we begin our search for the Lost city of the Incas.
Our bilingual guide picks us up at QP, an hour ride to the small Andean town of Chilca. Here we will meet our porters and camp staff. As our porters load the heavy gear, we head down river alongside the rushing Vilcanota River, with magnificent views of the Wakay-Wilca snow peaks. We'll arrive at the Inca town of Llactapata and spend some time exploring this site. We camp for the nite within view of the ruins.Day four : After breakfast we start up the Cuscichaca valley past the small village of Huyallabamba and through the remnant cloud forest, ascending steadily to the head of the valley, below the high pass of Warmiwanusca. Our campsite gives us spectacular views of the Huayanay snow peaks.
Day five : Today, a steady three to four hour climb brings us to the highest Pass (Warmiwanusca or "dead womans pass") in the Inca Trail at 13,384 ft. above sea level. After taking in the views, it's a steady down-climb to the Pacasmayo valley where we pick up our first real signs of a paved Inca road, climbing an impressive carved stairway to the minor ruins of Runkaracay.
Continuing up this Inca stairway we cross yet another pass and drop down to the ruins of Sayacmarca. From here to the ruins of Phuyupatamarca, the trail traverses some of the finest, intact, paved Inca road known. Passing through moss and orchid laden mature cloud forest.
Day six : Final trail to Machu Picchu - Down we hike on a white granite stairway to Wiña- Wayna. This site was only discovered in the 1950's and rivals Machu Picchu in its splender. From here its 2 hrs through tree fern laden cloud forest to Intipunku, the Sun Gate, where we get our first and awe-inspiring view of the Citadel of Machu Picchu one of the magical sights in America.
We spend the day in Machu Picchu. In the afternoon we take the train back to QP for a nice hot shower. Dinner and nite at QPDay seven : Early start for our return to Cusco.
